Jomolhari Trek

Best Season: April to June and September to November

This trek has been shortened to 7 days due to new roads at both ends. With elevations ranging from 2,500m to nearly 5,000m, it takes you through diverse landscapes, wildlife, and forests. The highlight is the breathtaking view of Mount Jomolhari from Jangothang Basecamp.


Day 1: Drive to Shana → Trek to Thong Tsho Zampa

  • Drive (1.5 hours) to Shana, the trailhead.
  • Trek: ~9.5 km (4-5 hours) through forests and rivers.
  • Camp at: 3,350m.

Day 2: Thong Tsho Zampa → Thang Thangka

  • Trek: ~8 km (4-5 hours) along the Paro River, with mountain views.
  • Camp at: 3,750m.

Day 3: Thang Thangka → Jangothang

  • Trek: ~14 km (6-7 hours) into high-altitude wilderness.
  • Camp at: 4,100m, with stunning views of Jomolhari (7,326m).

Day 4: Acclimatization & Exploration at Jangothang

  • Rest day with short hikes to lakes and viewpoints.
  • See: Snow-capped peaks (Jomolhari & Jichu Drake) and possibly blue sheep.
  • Optional hikes:
    • Tosoh Valley (glacial views).
    • Jichu Drake basecamp.
    • Eastern unclimbed peaks.

Day 5: Jangothang → Lingzhi (via Nyele La Pass, 4,900m)

  • Trek: ~17 km (7-8 hours), crossing Nyele La Pass (4,900m).
  • Descend into the Lingzhi Valley.
  • Camp at: 4,050m.

Day 6: Lingzhi → Zhodu (via Yakley La Pass, 4,950m)

  • Trek: ~18 km (7-8 hours), crossing Yakley La Pass (4,950m).
  • Spot yaks and remote herder camps.
  • Camp at: 4,100m.

Day 7: Zhodu → Barshong (Exit Day)

  • Trek: ~16 km (6-7 hours) downhill through forests.
  • End point: Barshong (3,600m), where a vehicle will pick you up.
